About This Calculator:
The calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), then applies activity multipliers and adjusts based on your goals. This approach is considered among the most accurate for estimating calorie needs for a plant-based lifestyle.
Calculation Method: This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation as its foundation, which is considered one of the most accurate formulas for estimating calorie needs.
For males: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) + 5
For females: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) – 161
Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE): Your BMR is multiplied by an activity factor to determine your maintenance calorie needs:
- Sedentary (little or no exercise): BMR × 1.2
- Lightly active (light exercise 1-3 days/week): BMR × 1.375
- Moderately active (moderate exercise 3-5 days/week): BMR × 1.55
- Very active (hard exercise 6-7 days/week): BMR × 1.725
- Extremely active (very hard exercise, physical job): BMR × 1.9
Goal Adjustments:
- Weight loss: 20% calorie deficit from maintenance (TDEE × 0.8)
- Maintenance: Calculated TDEE
- Muscle gain: 15% calorie surplus from maintenance (TDEE × 1.15)
Vegan Considerations: This calculator works well for plant-based diets. When following a vegan diet, focus on nutrient-dense whole foods to meet your calorie goals. Plant foods are often less calorie-dense but higher in fiber, which can help with weight management.
Important Note: This calculator provides estimates. Individual metabolism varies, and you should adjust your intake based on results. If you have health conditions or special dietary needs, consult with a registered dietitian.
